Cereal brands often like to boast about the number of whole grains cereals in their ranges, but very few of us actually know what this means. For those who don't know, if a cereal is made using whole grains then it means that the grains used to make the cereal contain all 3 nutritious and edible parts of the grain - the outer bran, the germ, and the endosperm.
The benefit of this is that whole grains contain a lot more nutrients than you'll find in refined grains, such as more fibre, B vitamins, folic acid, and more.
We're lucky that here in the UK there are lots of excellent whole grain cereals that you can buy. We wanted to round up the best whole grain cereal you can buy in the UK based on our preferences and what percentage of whole grains they include in their ingredients, let's get into it:
We'd probably describe Shredded Wheat as the most famous brand of whole grain cereal, as in all of the marketing for this cereal, a big deal is always made of how it's made from 100% whole grain wheat. It's also great to see that the wheat used to make this cereal is grown and sown on British farms.
It's worth mentioning that Shredded Wheat is a cereal from the Nestle brand, and any Nestle cereal with the green whole grain banner on the front of the packet contains at least 8g of whole grain per 30g.

BEAR Cocoa Alpha Bites
If you want a whole grain cereal which is really tasty then we'll admit that the Nestle range might be your best bet - even cereals such as Cookie Crisp and Nesquik contain whole grains, which is impressive. But for a tasty whole grain cereal which also isn't ultra processed and full of other junk, we'd definitely recommend the Cocoa Alpha Bites from BEAR. This cereal is made using Whole Grain Ground Wheat, which is 38% of the recipe. Learn more and buy it here - tesco.com
If you're following a gluten free diet then you might find it a bit harder to find a whole grain cereal as grains such as wheat contain gluten. There are lots of excellent gluten free cereals out there, but we could only find a few which are whole grain, with Nutribrex being a standout. This cereal is really interesting because it's made from 96% wholegrain sorghum, a grain which is naturally gluten free. This cereal tastes very similar to Weetabix and it's great to get a different type of whole grain into your diet instead of just wheat, so this whole grain cereal is great for everyone, not just people following a gluten free diet. The Weetabix brand doesn't make as much of a noise about the whole grain ingredients in its cereals, so for anyone who isn't aware, Weetabix is made from 95% whole grain wheat.
The standard variety of Weetabix is also a whole grain cereal, but we'd always recommend choosing the organic version of this cereal if you can find it. This is because the wheat in Weetabix Organic is grown without the use of artificial chemical fertilisers, herbicides, or pesticides. Learn more and buy it here - ocado.com
Post Grape Nuts
Post Grape Nuts is quite an old-fashioned cereal which can be quite hard to get your hands on, but we see it stocked in our local Waitrose very regularly. Like many of the old-fashioned cereals out there, the ingredients of Post Grape Nuts are very straightforward, and the number 1 ingredient used is wholegrain wheat flour, which is 89% of this cereal.
