6 vegan hot dogs that taste better than real hot dogs (seriously)

Published by Finn Hayden

Not long ago, being a vegan at a BBQ wouldn't have been much fun. You'd be stuck grilling vegetables and mushrooms, which although tasty, don't really compare to a nice juicy burger.

But nowadays, vegans can enjoy a BBQ as much as anyone else thanks to the excellent choice of vegan alternatives to popular BBQ foods, such as hot dogs. In fact, there are now so many excellent vegan hot dogs out there that we thought it would be useful to round up the best that we've bought and tried, let's get into it:

Moving Mountains Plant Based Hot Dogs

We've written previously about the delicious vegan burgers from Moving Mountains, but we have to say that the vegan hot dogs might be even better. Made using sunflower seeds (which in itself is quite remarkable), we think that these vegan hot dogs are about as close to real hot dogs as you can get in terms of taste and texture. They're smoked on beech wood chips before they're packed, so they have that perfect BBQ flavour, even if you're just cooking them in water. And it's not just us that thinks these are excellent - the product won a 'Great Taste' award in 2021. Learn more and buy them here - waitrose.com

Fry's original hot dogs

We loved the vegan chicken nuggets from Fry's, and we think these vegan hot dogs are just as good. Made using a blend of soy and wheat protein, the texture is great and so if the flavour. Just like the vegan hot dogs from Moving Mountains, these plant-based hot dogs from Fry's have a lovely smoky flavour because they're infused with a hickory smoke flavour, so they taste like they've just come off the BBQ.  They're also free from MSG and artificial colours. Taifun Tofu Wieners

Tofu is a staple of the vegan diet, because it's such a versatile food. These hot dog weiners from Taifun are made from tofu and have a really great texture and taste. They don't have a smokiness out of the box, but they're easy to BBQ and taste a lot like pork hot dogs. We also noticed that these weiners are very highly-rated on the Waitrose website, with a rating of 4.4 out of 5 from almost 40 reviews. Learn more and buy them here - waitrose.com

Wheaty vegan hot dogs

Just like toftu, seitan is a food which most vegans will be more than familiar with. These hot dogs from the Wheaty brand are made using seitan, which gives them a texture very similar to hot dogs made from pork. These plant-based hot dogs are entirely organic and they have a little smokiness thanks to the beech wood smoke and paprika which has been added. We love these and they work great on a BBQ but are also great if you're just cooking them normally, learn more and buy them here - wheaty.com

These aren't actually called hot dogs, but they're weiners and they work perfectly as a vegan alternative to hot dogs. Made from a blend of tofu and wheat protein, the texture is excellent and the flavour is nice too. They're also 100% organic and made with beech wood smoke, so they have a lovely smokiness.
