Low calorie alcoholic drinks that are tasty but not full of calories (our top 6)

Published by Finn Hayden

Having an alcoholic drink can be a great way to relax and unwind, but one of the major downsides of alcoholic drinks is that most of them tend to be packed with calories. And because you're drinking these calories rather than eating them, it's very easy to consume lots of calories in a short space of time without really noticing.

We've seen lots of guides about low calorie alcoholic drinks online, but most of these seem to focus on drinks that you make yourself rather than drinks you can buy. So if you're looking for a low calorie alcoholic drink that you can buy at the supermarket off the shelf, then these guides aren't very helpful.

For this reason, we thought it would be useful to round up the best low calorie alcoholic drinks that you can buy either online or at the supermarket. Let's get into it:

Traces wine

People often think that wine is a lower calorie choice compared to other alcohol drinks such as beer, but this really isn't the case - in fact, wine is often packed with calories. But there are low calorie wine options out there, and we think that Traces Wine is the best that we've found. What's really impressive about Traces Wine is that, despite containing just 78 calories per 125ml glass, it still manages to be full of flavour and retain 11% ABV. To put that into perspective, a 125ml glass of the 19 Crimes Chardonnay contains 100 calories, so your'e saving a very good amount of calories by switching to Traces. DRTY hard seltzer

Hard seltzers are quickly growing in popularity here in the UK, not just because they taste great but also because they're typically low in calories. If you're not familiar with what a hard seltzer is, it's simply sparkling water mixed with alcohol and some kind of flavouring. DRTY is a hard seltzer brand which has really grown in popularity recently, and we're not surprised to see that - not only does it taste great, it's also very low in calories at just 89 calories per can. It's 4% alcohol too, so it's not like it's just a watered down drink or anything like that. We love the White Citrus flavour and the Mango Passion flavour (pictured). Tennent's Light

Many people reading this guide might have assumed that beer would be totally off the table when it comes to low calorie options, but that really isn't the case - as we've written about previously, there are lots of low calorie beers out there. In our opinion, the lowest calorie lager that still has a great taste and a decent alcohol content is Tennent's Light. It's 3.5% ABV which is only 0.5% less than normal Tennent's, but the great thing about Tennent's Light is that it contains just 20 calories per 100ml. We love the light, refreshing tastes of this beer and think that it's much better than other lagers which are marketed as being low in calories. Learn more and buy it here - groceries.asda.com

HUN wines

Another great option for a low calorie wine comes from the HUN brand, which makes really tasty wine in cans. It's not quite as strong as normal wine at 5.5% ABV, but it still tastes great and it's very low in calories at just 69kcal per 250ml can. We're big fans of the rosé variety which tastes really fresh, but you can also buy a sauvignon blanc version of this wine. Learn more and buy it here - amazon.co.uk

White Claw

White Claw is a hard seltzer brand which has been popular in the USA for quite a while now, and we've started seeing it appearing on supermarket shelves here in the UK. It's a really tasty drink and it's also a 4.5% alcohol drink, so it's slightly stronger than many of the other hard seltzers you can buy. But impressively it still manages to be really low in calories with just 95 calories and 2g of sugar per 330ml can. We're big fans of the Natural Lime flavour which has a very subtle sweetness (no artificial sweeteners are used in these drinks). Learn more and buy it here - tesco.com

Skinny IPA

If you prefer an IPA to a lager then you've probably noticed that IPA beers tend to have more calories than lighter beers such as lager. This is why we're really big fans of Skinny IPA, which manages to be both full of flavour and low in calories. Each 330ml can of Skinny IPA contains just 89 calories per can, which is seriously impressive. It's also 4% ABV which is very similar to what you'll find with other IPA beers. To put this into perspective, a 330ml can of the popular Punk IPA from Brewdog contains 158 calories, almost double what you'll find in a can of Skinny IPA.
