Pickerings gin Review – Gin from the heart of Edinburgh, and a delicious 1947 recipe from Bombay.

Edinburgh’s gin scene has almost become a bit of a fad. Edinburgh Gin was established in 2010, Lind and Lime in 2018 and Height of Arrows in 2021. While the Pickerings brand only came into being when they established their gin distillery, they were the first for over 150 years. Their recipe, too, was developed in 1947.  Now, that’s heritage.  Situated in the famous Summerhall, right in the heart of Edinburgh, Pickerings have been one of the most popular gins to come out of Edinburgh. Today, we’re giving them a shot to see whether they stand up against the other fantastic gins produced in Edinburgh.    After reading this review,…

There is so much to see in the city, but one of the great things about Edinburgh is that as far cities go, it isn't too big. This means that you can easily walk around Edinburgh (as long as you don't mind a few hills). Because Edinburgh is so great for walking, it should come as no surprise that there are plenty of walking tours that you can follow throughout the city. Hadrian’s Cycleway – our guide to this lovely cycle route from Ravenglass to Whitley Bay

There are hundreds of cycle routes to follow across the UK, and we've written about many of them (read our guide about the Exe Estuary Trail here). But we do have to admit, we have a real soft spot for Hadrian's Cycleway (Route 72). This route isn't particularly challenging but it does take you past some of the prettiest areas in the North of England, including a good mix of coastal and inland scenery as well as, of course, Hadrian's Wall. We'll be taking a close look at this route, highlighting each section and the things you can see and do along the way if you're not pressed for time…

Lind & Lime Gin – Our review of another amazing gin from Edinburgh

Of all the gins we’ve tried from Edinburgh, Lind and Lime are always recommended as the best. On forums like Reddit, gin review sites and people you speak to. It has an uncannily positive following of diehard fans and advocates, unlike any other gin we’ve come across.  When you spend your life reviewing products and writing about them, you often find that something is popular – not because it is good – but because lots of people say it is good. It’s hard to be objective within a crowd.  A local to Edinburgh, who writes for us, often says this very thing about Leith. This part of Edinburgh has a…

But you might be surprised at how many excellent cycling routes there are in Scotland. Height of Arrows – Holyrood Distillery Gin Review

We’ve been on a bit of a bender recently. If it’s not Aldi red wines, it’s trying new and interesting gins.  After a recent trip into the city, we realised that Edinburgh is home to some of the best Gin distilleries in the UK, if not the world. The city is fast becoming a fine dining destination, and cocktails are a huge part of that renaissance.  Today, we’re trying one of the up-and-coming stars of Edinburgh, the Height of Arrows by Holyrood Distillery. This brand seems to have mostly flown under the radar of online recommendations (particularly when compared to the likes of Lind & Lime Gin), but it has…

Marriott’s Way – our guide to this excellent 26 mile Norfolk route

We write about lots of walking routes on our website, many of which extend for well over 100 miles. While this can be great if you have the time to complete a 100-mile trip, for most of us it isn't really doable. That's why we love shorter routes like Marriott's Way - it's only 26 miles long, but there is plenty to enjoy along the way. You can walk or cycle this route, it really depends how you want to experience it. We'd recommend walking as the slower pace is better suited to admiring your surroundings. This route takes you between two disused railway lines and runs between the historic market…

Gin map of Edinburgh – all the best gins that Edinburgh produces

Edinburgh, Scotland's capital, is quickly becoming one of the hottest food and drink cities in the UK. Its unique culture, climate, and character have provided an opportunity for restaurants and entrepreneurs to get creative. If there is one thing that Edinburgh - and Scotland - likes to do, it's have a tipple. While the highlands are absolutely the place to sample whiskey at its source, Edinburgh is the city of gin. Great gin, in fact. Some of the best in Scotland. Maybe the best in the world! Not only does this mean that the city is a great night out if you love cocktail bars and fine restaurants, but the…
