Yazoo milkshakes are actually quite healthy

Published by Finn Hayden

Yazoo is one of those brands that seems to have been around forever - I remember kids at my school drinking these milkshakes all the time.

I think it's often assumed that Yazoo drinks aren't healthy, like most milkshakes on supermarket shelves. But I wanted to take a proper look at the drinks to see how healthy they really are. And to be honest, I was impressed by what I found. Let's get into it:

What is Yazoo made from?

Each of the 3 main Yazoo flavours is made mostly from a blend of Semi Skimmed Milk and Skimmed Milk. I was surprised and impressed that Yazoo is made without any artificial sweeteners, flavours or colours, as that's certainly not the case with most milkshakes that I've looked at.

Nutrition

I found it really interesting to look at the nutritional statistics of the Yazoo drinks, because I've spent a lot of time looking at high protein drinks that are often marketed as being really healthy for you. But in many cases, Yazoo was actually healthier than these so-called healthy protein drinks.

For example, the Yazoo Chocolate Milk contains 62 calories per 100ml, which is only 2 calories more than you'll find in the same amount of the Grenade Carb Killa Fudge Brownie Protein Shake. Also, the Grenade Carb Killa Fudge Brownie Protein Shake contains 2.2g of fat per 100ml, which is almost double the amount you'll find in the same amount of Yazoo Chocolate Milk. The Grenade Carb Killa Fudge Brownie Protein Shake is much lower in sugar and higher in protein compared to the Yazoo Chocolate Milk, but it also contains almost 3 times as much salt.

It's a bit unfair to compare Yazoo to high protein drinks which are created to be healthier than a standard milkshake, but when you compare Yazoo to other milkshakes on the market they're still really impressive. For example, the Muller Frijj Fudge Brownie Milkshake contains 72 calories per 100ml. and the Shaken Udder Vanillalicious Milkshake contains 64 calories per 100ml, making both of them higher in calories than the Chocolate Yazoo (which is the highest-calorie Yazoo flavour). Also, the Muller Frijj Fudge Brownie Milkshake contains 10.9g of sugar per 100ml, which is over 2g more sugar than you'll find in the same amount of Chocolate Yazoo.

If I had to give a negative to Yazoo compared to these other milkshakes, it would be that it is slightly lower in protein. Both Muller Frijj  Fudge Brownie Milkshake and Shaken Udder Vanillalicious Milkshake contain more protein per 100ml - not huge amounts, but it does add up. This is also quite surprising because Yazoo does say 'high in protein' on the front of the bottle.

Interestingly, each of the 3 main Yazoo flavours - banana, chocolate, and strawberry - are all quite different in terms of nutrition. The banana flavour is lowest in calories and fat, at just 57 calories and 1.1g of fat per 100ml. The Strawberry flavour is lower in calories and fat compared to the Chocolate flavour, but is also the flavour which contains the most sugar per 100ml of the 3 (there's more almost 1g more sugar in the Strawberry flavour compared to Chocolate and Banana).
Lastly, each Yazoo flavour contains both Calcium and Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), with the Strawberry flavour containing slightly more Calcium (120mg per 100ml). This is more Calcium than you get in the same amount of Muller Frijj  Fudge Brownie Milkshake (116mg) and Shaken Udder Vanillalicious Milkshake (115mg).

Final thoughts

So as you can see, Yazoo milkshakes are actually quite healthy when compared to other milkshakes on the market, and they're even healthy compared to some high protein drinks you can buy. Yazoo milkshakes are lower in calories and fat than many brands, and also sugar.

The only downside is that Yazoo milkshakes aren't especially high in protein, despite claiming to be.

Let me know what you think of Yazoo milkshakes in the comments!
