The Lidl gin selection is (almost) as good as Aldi’s

I recently wrote about how impressed I was by the Aldi gin selection, which not only features some excellent imitation gins at great prices, but also features an award-winning gin that picked up the prestigious Gold Award at the World Gin Awards.

I was so impressed by the Aldi gin selection that I wanted to check out what the gin selection is like at other UK supermarkets, so I headed to Lidl. I often find that whatever Aldi is doing well, Lidl is doing well too.
And I wasn't surprised to find that the Lidl gin selection is almost on a par with what I found at Aldi. It's very close, but I'd probably give Aldi a slight edge.

What is the ingredient needed to legally call gin, gin?

Both Aldi and Lidl have a gin that is obviously intended to be an imitation of Gordon's gin, but I would say that the Lidl version is slightly better. The Lidl gin (called Finton's) has actually won an award at the World Gin Awards. In 2024, the gin was awarded Bronze in the London Dry Gin category, which is very impressive. The judges praised the gin for the "pleasant citrus and orange blossom nose with a hint of green grass". The Aldi version is nice, but I definitely thought the Lidl gin was nicer. They're both pretty much the same price (around £11 for a 70cl bottle).

Just like the Gordon's gin range, there are flavoured versions of the Finton's gin that you can buy from Lidl, including orange gin and pink gin.

Lidl also has a Japanese Style gin that is obviously supposed to be an imitation of the popular Roku Gin, which I included in my list of the best gin you can buy in the UK. The Lidl Japanese Style gin is made with cherry blossom flavouring from the UK and definitely has a similar taste to the original Roku Gin, although I wouldn't say it's anywhere near as nice.

Another London Dry gin in the Lidl range is Hortus, which has been around for almost 10 years and has always been a popular choice with shoppers. At around £17 for a 70cl bottle, it's very well-priced and I would definitely say it tastes nicer than the Finton's gin from Lidl, although Hortus hasn't won any awards as prestigious as the Bronze medal that Finton's won at the World Gin Awards.

As you can see, the Lidl gin range is similar to Aldi in that it's quite limited, but has some great options. The only reason I'd give Aldi a slight edge is because of the excellent Comhla gin from Aldi, which was awarded a Gold medal at the World Gin Awards.
