The Lidl bakery selection is excellent (& underrated)

Regular readers will know that I love writing about Lidl - I'm a huge fan of the Lidl high protein range, and I recently wrote about how good their gin selection is too.
But there is one aspect of Lidl that tends to light up social media more than any other - the bakery. Frequently voted as the best supermarket bakery of them all, the Lidl bakery has reached almost legendary status. And yet, I still feel that in many ways, it is underrated.
For this guide, I visited my local Lidl to show you what my go-to Lidl bakery items are, plus what I believe to be the best of the bunch, and the most underrated.

To start with - if your local Lidl bakery has one of these 'Deluxe' sections, definitely check it out, especially if you're looking for a nice loaf of bread. I'm lucky enough to have a local Lidl with one of these sections, and I always head here if I'm looking to buy some bread. In these sections you'll usually find a number of sourdough loaves, but I prefer one of the cobs, which is just a straightforward traditional white bread that's nice and crusty. Pretty much every loaf in this section still comes in at under £2, despite definitely being a "premium" product.

You can't really talk about the Lidl bakery without mentioning the sweet treats. It's what the Lidl bakery is known for, and it's also the reason why Lidl puts the bakery right next to the entrance of their shops - they know they can entice people in with delicious sweet treats as soon as they walk in.
For me, the highlight of the Lidl bakery is the pain au chocolat, and I know that plenty of people agree with me. The pain au chocolats from the Lidl bakery are flaky, buttery, and best of all, very reasonably priced at just 75p each (almost half the price as the pain au chocolats from the M&S bakery.
If you want something similar to the pain au chocolat, Lidl also do a lovely chocolate hazelnut croissant, which is the same price.

I feel that an underrated part of the Lidl bakery is the doughnut selection. At my local Lidl, they've added a section dedicated to doughnuts in an attempt to draw attention to them. I am a big fan of the jam filled doughnuts at the Lidl bakery, which can be picked up for under 40p each, but if you're not a fan of jam then you've got plenty of other choices, such as the chocolate cronut (half doughnut, half croissant).

Bit if I had to choose one part of the Lidl bakery to highlight, it would definitely be the bread rolls section - it's unbeliveably underrated, despite being excellent and very reasonably priced. You'll find everything from simple morning rolls that are ideal for a bacon butty, to more interesting bread rolls like the stone baked white rolls or the panini rolls. Seriously, don't skip the bread roll section! It's amazing and so much nicer than buying rolls out of a packet.
If you've got a Lidl bakery item that you love, let me know about it in the comments!
