The Holland & Barrett ‘Precision Engineered’ range has put a cat among the pigeons

Published by Finn Hayden

I've always been a fan of many of the own-brand products at Holland & Barrett, for example, I've written previously that I think the CBD cream range is pretty excellent, and they're great when it comes to niche things like seaweed snacks. But I've always felt that the own-brand range of fitness supplements from H&B has been lacking somewhat.

However, I have to admit that I'm blown away by the new range of own-brand fitness supplements that Holland & Barrett has just launched under the 'Precision Engineered' banner, and I wouldn't be surprised if this launch has left some of the bigger fitness brands quaking in their weightlifting shoes.

For starters, everything in this new range is Informed Sport certified. This is a big deal right off the bat, because it means that professional athletes can use these products safely, which wasn't the case with the previous range of own-brand Holland and Barrett fitness supplements. This alone puts a huge spanner in the works for many premium fitness supplement brands - the Informed Sport certification involves an expensive and quite complicated process, and for the premium brands in the fitness supplement space, it was something that could set them apart from the likes of Holland and Barrett. But now that the Holland and Barrett own-brand fitness supplements have this certification, the so-called premium brands will have to think of other ways to justify the higher price that they charge.

Let's take a look at the price too - I bought a 364g tub of this new Holland and Barrett clear whey protein for £20, and it tastes nice. I also bought clear whey protein from Healthspan Elite, and it cost me almost £9 more. And in my opinion, they both taste as nice as each other. They're both Informed Sport certified and both good products, it just so happens that the Precision Engineered clear whey protein is quite a bit cheaper.

I also bought the Precision Engineered creatine - again, it's Informed Sport certified and is a great product. The price of the Precision Engineered creatine works out to £7.50 per 100g, whereas if I bought the creatine from Healthspan Elite it would cost me £8.80 per 100g.

Also, as well all know, Holland and Barrett is always doing offers like Buy One Get One Free and Black Friday stuff, which is going to make it even harder for brands like Healthspan Elite to justify their high prices.
I expect many of the bigger UK fitness supplement brands will be very worried about the launch of the Holland and Barrett 'Precision Engineered' range, and I'm excited to see what other products are added to the range.
