Supermarket own brand gin – the best I’ve tried

Published by Finn Hayden

Gin is definitely one of the most versatile alcoholic drinks you can buy - straight, with tonic or mixed with just about anything, it can taste lovely.

We're lucky here in the UK to have a pretty excellent range of own-brand supermarket gins to choose from. I've narrowed it down to the top 4 that I've tried, hopefully you find this guide useful if you're heading out to the shops and looking for a gin that tastes great but won't break the bank.

Spoiler alert - this guide isn't particularly exciting, because 2 UK supermarkets were head and shoulders above every other supermarket I tried for own-brand gin.

Let's get into the guide:

After reading this review, we’ve broken down what we think are the best Scottish gins. It is a comprehensive guide, including our favourites, of all the gin we’ve tried (and that is a lot).

M&S Warner's Old Tom Gin

You might not actually realise that this gin is exclusively made for M&S unless you take a very close look at the label. Warner's Distillery is based in Northamptonshire, and produces small batches of artisan gin exclusively for M&S. I really loved this gin - it's part of the M&S Collection, and although it tastes premium, it's very affordable at £30 for a 700ml bottle. It has strong citrus notes, and is made with hand-picked lavender too. It's very drinkable and I think the price makes it very appealing too. You can learn more and buy it here - ocado.com

Waitrose London Dry Gin

You can probably tell from the branding of this bottle that this is the "cheaper" own-brand option from Waitrose - I couldn't actually find many other own-brand gins from Waitrose, so I only tried this one. But I have to say, this was extremely enjoyable and surprised me quite a bit given how affordable it is. For starters, it's made using a blend of 8 botanicals including berries and spices, so it really does have a full, pleasant taste. It also only cost me £15 for a 700ml bottle, which is very cheap. I was impressed by this and thought that it tasted fantastic mixed with tonic, learn more and buy it here - waitrose.com

M&S London Dry Gin

This is the cheapest own-brand gin you can buy from M&S, and although I wouldn't say it was quite as nice as the London Dry gin from Waitrose, it's still very drinkable, and very well-priced. I nabbed this 700ml bottle for just £14. Like the Waitrose own-brand London Dry gin, this gin from M&S is made using a blend of 8 different botanicals and spices, including Orange Peel and Dried Liquorice. M&S London Dry Gin

Distilled London Dry Gin by M&S

As you can probably tell by the label, this is the slightly fancier (and more expensive) own-brand London Dry gin available to buy from M&S. I would say it's nicer than the cheaper option, but it also comes with a slight increase in price of £5. What's interesting is that this fancier own-brand gin is made from just 7 botanicals and spices, including Grapefruit Oil (which really comes through) and Orris Root. Sainsbury's Dry London

This was a surprise. Thoughtful, fruity, spiced and a truly fantastic twist on the classic.

Distilled using Corsican lemons and french blackcurret buds, this gin will impress even the most picky of London dry gin fans.

Sainsbury's has been upping it's game recently. With many of our "best supermarkets" articles, Sainsbury's is often above the more "premium" shops.

M&S has nothing on this fantastic gin. Find more information in store or via their website.
