As we get closer to summer, I've been trying really hard to slim down -  a big part of that has been exercise, but I didn't see real results until I started changing my diet. The issue I've had with changing my diet is that I really enjoy my weekend treats, as they help to get me through the week.

One of my big weekend treats is a beer (or 2), but as most of us know, beer tends to be packed with calories and carbs, so it's not typically a drink that people trying to slim down can enjoy.

But one of the great things about this modern world that we live in is that a number of companies have figured out how to make the treats that we love slightly healthier. Just take a look at what Lidl has managed to do with cheesecake.

So the good news for me is that there is now beer out there which is slightly "healthier" than a normal pint, making it a treat I can enjoy on a diet - I use "healthier" in quotation marks because, let's face it, there is very little that is healthy about alcohol. But if you look at my low calorie lager guide and my low carb beer guide, you'll see that there are now a number of beers out there which are significantly lower in carbs and calories compared to most of what you'll find at the pub.

One low calorie/low carb beer brand I've been drinking quite a bit of recently is Prime Time - this brand has both a lager and an IPA, which I spotted on the shelves at my local Waitrose. Having tried both of these Prime Time beers and lots of other low calorie/low carb beers, I feel pretty well-placed to give Prime Time a proper review.

Prime Time Lager

For starters, the Prime Time Lager+, which is definitely the more interesting of the 2. What really separates this lager from other low carb/low calorie lagers that we've tried is that it contains added caffeine - each can of Prime Time Lager+ contains 50mg of caffeine, which is roughly equivalent to half a cup of coffee. The idea is that the caffeine gives you a little buzz, which I personally didn't really feel - I see that Prime Time also has a normal lager without the added caffeine, and I think I'll buy that next time as it contains exactly the same number of calories and carbs as the Lager+.
Prime Time Lager
Speaking of calories and carbs, each 330ml can of the Prime Time Lager contains 95 calories and 4g of carbs. In terms of calories, I've definitely had lagers that are lower in calories and carbs which taste just as good as the Prime Time Lager, if not better. For example, the Skinny Lager I've tried previously contains 89 calories per 330ml, and only 3g of carbs. The same is true of LEAN LAGER, which is lower in both calories and carbs compared to Prime Time Lager and tastes better IMO. And then you've got Tennent's Light, which doesn't taste quite as good as Prime Time Lager but is miles lower in both calories and carbs, with just 63 calories per 330ml can and 0.7g of carbs per 330ml.
The one thing that Prime Time Lager has going for it is that it's slightly stronger in terms of ABV compared to the Skinny Lager and LEAN LAGER, at 4.2% alcohol.

Prime Time IPA

I'm definitely more of a lager guy, but I also gave the Prime Time IPA a shot as I've heard it's good. I quite liked the taste and the first thing I'd say is that I preferred the taste of the Prime Time IPA compared to the Skinny IPA I've tried a few times.
Prime Time IPA
But once again, the Prime Time IPA is higher in both calories and carbs compared to the Skinny IPA, with 1.4g more carbs per 330ml. If you're following a keto diet and trying to cut down on carbs, that is quite a significant difference. I'm going to try some more low calorie/low carb IPAs to see how they compare to the Prime Time IPA.

Anything else to mention?

Taste is always personal, and I've mentioned that I think a number of other low calorie/low carb lagers I've tried taste better than the Prime Time Lager, but it's worth mentioning that the Prime Time Lager has picked up a Great Taste award, so clearly someone out there think it's nice.
If you've tried either the Prime Time Lager or the Prime Time IPA, let me know your thoughts in the comments!
