This new high protein cereal from Lidl is a great Surreal alternative

Regular readers will know that Lidl is one of my favourite places to visit if I'm looking to stock up on high protein food items. Until fairly recently, most of the high protein products at Lidl have been found in the fridge section (things like cheesecake and puddings), but Lidl has recently expanded its high protein range to include items that don't need to be kept in the fridge.

Last time I popped into my local Lidl, these High Protein Hoops caught my eye. For starters, the front of the box mentions that this cereal is fortified with vitamins like Vitamin B6, B12, and D. Most of the cereal in Lidl isn't fortified with anything (which has always really annoyed me), so this was great to see.

But also, I've tried loads of high protein cereal over the years, and the nutritional stats for the Lidl High Protein Hoops really impressed me. For starters, both varieties of this cereal contain over 24.5g of protein per 100g (with the Hazelnut flavour containing 24.7g and the Vanilla flavour containing exactly 24.5g of protein). That's crazy good - to put that into perspective, Weetabix Protein only contains 19g of protein per 100g, and Special K Protein only contains 13g of protein per 100g.

Even comparing these Lidl High Protein Hoops to Surreal, probably the biggest high protein cereal brand in the UK, they're still impressive - the Frosted variety of Surreal contains 35g of protein per 100g, so while it is higher than the Lidl High Protein Hoops, it's not way higher. And considering the Lidl High Protein Hoops only cost £1.75 per box (which is less than half the price of a box of Surreal), I'd say they're a very good alternative.

The Surreal cereal isn't fortified like the Lidl High Protein Hoops either, so you get all of those extra vitamins and minerals in every spoonful of the Lidl High Protein Hoops that you won't get in the Surreal cereal (which still contains some vitamins, just not as many).

And yes, the Surreal cereal is lower in sugar compared to the High Protein Hoops from Lidl, but only very slightly - 100g of the Frosted Surreal cereal contains 0.9g of sugar, and in the same amount of the Lidl High Protein Hoops you only get 1.1g of sugar.

So while the Surreal cereal is still higher in protein and lower in sugar compared to the Lidl High Protein Hoops, the difference isn't huge. But the price difference is very considerable, and as with most Lidl items I wouldn't be surprised to see a new version of this cereal in a few months time that is even higher in protein and even lower in carbs and sugar.
