I’m a fan of Lowrise Lager (but less keen on the Pale Ale)

If you're looking for beers that you can feel a little bit better about drinking, Waitrose has become a great option - I've found quite a few low calorie and low carb beers there, certainly more than I've found at any other UK supermarket.

On a recent trip to Waitrose, I spotted a brand called Lowrise on the shelves. This brand has a low cal lager and a low cal pale ale, so I decided to buy one of each to see what they're like. I was especially intrigued by the pale ale as I hadn't yet found a low cal ale that I like.

Lowrise Lager

Firstly, the Lowrise lager - each 330ml can of this beer contains 87 calories, which is 2 calories lower per 330ml than the Skinny lager I really enjoy. And actually, I think the Lowrise lager might taste a bit nicer than the Skinny Lager. It's made using a blend of New Zealand hops and British hops, and I would definitely say it's got a bit more "zing" compared to the Skinny Lager. Although if I was going to have more than a couple of beers in an evening, I would probably stick with the Skinny lager as I think it's a tad more drinkable.

Lowrise Lager might be lower in calories compared to Skinny Lager, but it still contains quite a few more calories compared to the likes of LEAN LAGER or Tennent's Light (both of those contain 22 calories fewer than Lowrise Lager per 330ml can).

Although the Lowrise Lager might not be too impressive on the calorie front, it's much more impressive on the carb front - each 330ml can contains 1.8g of carbs, which is almost half of what you'll find in a 330ml Skinny Lager can (they contain 3g of carbs per 330ml can). This is still nothing compared to the likes of Tennent's Light or LEAN LAGER, but considering how nice the Lowrise Lager tastes and the fact that it's 4% alcohol, it's still really impressive.

I have to admit, I quite like the taste of the Lowrise Pale Ale, but I prefer the lager. I'm not sure if it's something to do with how ales are brewed, but I'm yet to find a low calorie ale that I actually enjoy (the Skinny IPA is not bad but not amazing).

The Lowrise Pale Ale also contains 87 calories per 330ml can, which again is 2 calories fewer per 330ml compared to the Skinny IPA (it's good to be consistent), and the Pale Ale also contains 1.8g of carbs per 330ml, which is the same as the Lowrise Lager.

I don't really have much more to say about this, mainly because there isn't much out there to compare it to - most of the low cal/low carb beers I've seen and tried have been lagers. But in short, I probably won't be buying the Lowrise Pale Ale again.

So that's my take on the Lowrise beers - I like the lager and think it has an interesting, nice taste, but I'm less keen on the Pale Ale. However overall, I'm just happy to see more low cal/low carb beers being stocked in my local supermarket.

If you've tried the Lowrise beers, let me know your thoughts on them in the comments!
