5 Essential Supplements for Vegans

Although there are many benefits to being vegan, the downside is many vegans need to think extra long and hard about what they're putting into their bodies. We're a delicate ecosystem that needs to be maintained, and a western vegan diet can often lack the correct nutrition.

So, we have decided to compile a list of the best supplements for vegans - so that you can get everything you need, and enjoy supplements that target weak points in the vegan diet, and are 100% naturally sourced and plant-based.

What supplements are best for a vegan?

Well, the supplements can change but the core basic vitamins and minerals that vegans usually miss out on are always the same. Meat naturally contains a huge range of essential compounds and minerals, and it can be very difficult to get the right nutrition from the vegetables you're eating.

It is why supplementing when vegan is often essential. Here are some of the compounds that you need to supplement and we have included them in bold throughout our blogpost so you can see which supplements contain each key worthy compound.

  1. Steady Source of Protein
  2. Zinc and Iron
  3. Vitamin B (mainly B12) and Vitamin D
  4. Calcium
  5. Omega 3 & 6
  6. Selenium
  7. Iodine

Spirulina

Spirulina is one of the healthiest and nutritionally dense substances on earth. It is an algae that is only found in a few places on earth and naturally contains the following.

  • Protein: 4 grams
  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine): 11% of the RDA
  • Vitamin B2 (riboflavin): 15% of the RDA
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin): 4% of the RDA
  • Copper: 21% of the RDA
  • Iron: 11% of the RDA

You can find Spirulina supplements really easily and they are fairly cheap to buy online. They pack in loads of the nutrients you need and do so from a natural source. Nothing synthetic here.

Hemp-Derived Omega 3 & 6 & Proteins

Hemp is a wonderfully natural source of Omega fatty acids. These essential compounds are usually found in fatty fish and most of the supplements available for the Omega acids are not suitable for vegans. Thankfully, Hemp seed oil is very abundant in naturally occurring (and unique) Omega 3 & 6 Fatty acids.

  • Omega 3 & 6
  • Protein
  • Cannabinoids
  • Sometimes Therapeutic Terpenes

There are other healthy oils that contain the Omega family but hemp is completely sustainable and is also a great source of cannabinoids. There is so much packed into hemp oil that you're best to grab some vegan friendly ones.

Liposomal Multivitamin with Vitamin B12 boost

One of the main supplements that vegans need is for vitamin B12. This vitamin is essential for repair and vitality, and sadly there are few great plant-based sources. Usually, it b12 comes from meats, milk and grass-fed animal products. Not great for a vegan.

  • Lots of B12
  • Vitamin A, C & D
  • Contains Iodine
  • All Natural Compounds
  • Vegan Friendly & Super Bioavalable

There are a range of supplements containing vitamin B12 but none of them are super effective. So we'd suggest taking a Liposomal multivitamin to boost the bioavailability of the compounds and to give you all of the vitamins and minerals you need.

This multivitamin has been designed specially to target all of the vitamins that vegans generally struggle with.

Mushroom Complex

You really cannot overlook the strength of your immune system and cognitive function. Specifically, as a vegan, if you do not plan your diet right you could be putting yourself at risk of ill health and 'brain fog'.

To combat both of these things, a mushroom complex supplement is perfect for vegans. The complexes usually contain Lions Mane (Brain), Cordyceps (lungs), Rachi (Immune System) and others that will support your body naturally.

You should expect increased energy & muscle recovery, immune system support, heart health and care, a high level of antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and a boost in concentration and cognition.

Seaweed & Kelp

Believe it or not, much like Spirulina, Seaweed is incredibly dense with vitamins and minerals. Thankfully, you no longer need to grab a handful of the stuff and boil it to get all of the lovely stuff you need.

Seaweed Contains:

  • Vitamin A, C, E and K,
  • Folate
  • Zinc
  • Sodium
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Iodine

There are various seaweed supplement varieties including Seamoss, Kelp, Makate and Nori.
