Buying Tater Tots in the UK (3 options you can try)

Tater tots are a staple of the American diet, with these crispy potato shapes being popular with young and old alike. But despite being very popular in the States, Tater Tots have never really caught on here in the UK for some reason. Having said that, there are ways in which you can still enjoy a taste of Tater Tots here in the UK. We thought it would be useful to round up a few ways in which us Brits can enjoy a taste of Tater Tots, let's get into it:

Firstly, what are Tater Tots?

Tater tots are deep-fried, small cylindrical potato snacks that are typically made from grated or finely chopped potatoes. They typically have a crunchy exterior with a soft and fluffy interior. 'Tater Tots' is actually a registered trademark of the brand Ore-Ida, but the term is often used to describe anything which resembles and tastes like Tater tots.

So, can you buy Tater Tots in the UK?

We should start by saying that if you want to eat buy real Tater Tots in the UK then it's far from straightforward. It's quite easy to buy a number of American products here in the UK, but because Tater Tots are a frozen product, they're much harder to find. We couldn't even find any on Amazon to buy. Your best bet is to visit an American food store and check the frozen aisle.

This is one option, however, we're fortunate that here in the UK there are a number of products which you can buy that might not officially be called Tater tots, but are just as good as the real thing. Here are some Tater tots alternatives you can try:

McCain Croquettes

We'd probably say that of all the Tater Tots alternatives that we've tried in the UK, McCain Croquettes are probably closest to the real thing, and to be honest we think they might be even nicer. These croquettes are simply deep-fried potatoes, but they have the crispiness on the outside and the fluffiness on the inside, exactly as you get from a Tater tot. And just like Tater tots, these croquettes are to be stored in the freezer. Learn more and buy this product here - tesco.com

Morrisons potato croquettes

We expected more of the UK supermarkets to have an own-brand version of a product similar to Tater Tots, but of all the supermarkets we checked, Morrisons was the only supermarket which had anything which reminded us of Tater Tots. These potato croquettes from Morrisons are very similar in texture and taste to Tater Tots. And actually, unlike Tater Tots, these potato croquettes from Morrisons are made without any artificial colours or flavours, which is very impressive.
