Best Adjustable Dumbbells for Weightlifting at Home (UK)

Since the pandemic, the wish to completely avoid gyms is understandable.

If you've already started your home gym, or you've just gotten used to your set-up, why would you want to go back during rush hour? When you could slip in a work-out when you have a down-moment, or enjoy the great outdoors, why would you need to spend £50 on a membership?

Enough of my pitch for getting yourself a whole home-gym kit. The single most instrumental bit of equipment you'll need for your home gym is an adjustable dumbbell. These are a cornerstone bit of equipment that can be used for pretty much anything you want to work. Whether you are pumping your pride muscles or going all in with lunges and deadlifts, the adjustable dumbbell fits right in.

I've searched long and hard for something that works, isn't a complete waste of time and can be taken to a weight that means I don't need to purchase an entire wall of weight.

Without further peacocking: here is our list of the best adjustable dumbbells that you can buy in the UK.

Spinlock Adjustable Weights

Different types of Adjustable Dumbbell

Before we get into the weights themselves, I wanted to draw out a few distinctions between some of the different types of adjustable dumbbells. Not every dumbell was created equally.

Spinlock - The old faithful

I have a few pairs of these hanging about. While they are rudimentary, they get the job done and do it well. This is usually a bar with a screw head and a spinlock wheel. You add your ring weights to the bars, screw on the lock and away you go.

The upside of the spinlock adjustable dumbbell is simply that you can mix and match different sets to increase the weight significantly. They are absolutely no fluff and are priced accordingly. The downside is that these aren't at all fun when adding/ taking off the weights (making dynamic workouts a process) and you need to keep a pile of ring weights (plastic, sand, metal etc...). Not very tidy.

The dial dumbbell is just a little more sophisticated than the screw-lock, but not too much. They come in a nice little box of plates that can be adjusted using a spin dial, or some kind of locking system. You lock up how much weight you want, and pull it out of the rack.

The upside is convenience, and being able to keep your gym room neat. The downside is that they only really go up to 40/50kg and I have found that cheaper ones break a lot!

Digital Adjustments - The future

Digital-adjusted dumbbells are a little smarter than the old spinlock. They usually come in holding docks with a little button and screen where you can set the weight. The little dock will add weight for you and you just need to give it a yank.

The upside of the digital docking station is that it is super easy to use, and the weight can be changed within seconds with no effort at all. The downside is that they need to be plugged in and don't respect your wallet very much. To add to that, most of the ones I have found do not go above 20kg.

TANNESS  15KG Adjustable Dumbbells Set - Screwlock - Cheap & Cheerful

Although you may be able to pick these adjustable dumbbells up at almost 10x less than some of the other inclusions on this list, these things are great for beginners and more advanced home gymers.

For £27, the lit comes with two barbells, and a longer bar with 12 plastic plates. Personally, I prefer metal bars and plates but the plastic ones here are robust enough and do the job. They are great for workouts inside the house, and are safe for delicate flooring (at least compared to metal adjustable dumbbells.

These are perfect for men and women and you can get a huge range of exercises done with them.

York Fitness Cast Chrome Dumbbell 20kg - Spinlock - Most Likely to last you years

I am a bit old-school when it comes to my adjustable dumbbells. While I'd like a set of the fancy-shmancy ones, I bought my dumbbells before anybody knew about them.

My old faithful are cast iron, uses a universal weight and a secure screw locking system. While this set only goes up to 20kg, it is possible to buy heavier and multiple plates. It means that the possibilities with these bars are almost endless.

So, if you're like me and don't need all the frills of a digital dumbbell, and you need something that will whether the years of workouts, then these are your best option.
