The best tinned sardines we’ve bought & tried

Published by Finn Hayden

We think sardines are really underrated, especially given how healthy they are. Just like most fish, sardines are a great source of protein and vitamins. Plus, they taste pretty excellent in our opinion.

Getting fresh sardines can be quite hard, but it's usually pretty easy to find tinned sardines. There are some tinned sardines which are better than others, so we thought it would be useful to round up the best tinned sardines that we've bought and tried, let's get into it:

All of the sardines in every tin from Fish4Ever are carefully selected so that only the plumpest and highest quality sardines make it to the tin. We definitely noticed that compared to many of the other sardines we tried for this guide, the sardines from Fish4Ever seemed plump and very tasty. These sardines are also sustainably-fished, and caught off the coast of Brittany using small purse seine nets. This sardines are brought to land within 12 hours of being caught, so they're very fresh. They're also cut by hand. We'd definitely describe these tinned sardines as premium and we really think that comes through in the taste. Learn more and buy them here -

Anyone who has read our guide to the best canned tuna we've tried will likely recognise the Ortiz brand, and we're happy to say that the sardines from this brand ooze of the same quality as the tuna. These tinned sardines won 1 Great Taste gold star in 2019, and they're the only tinned sardines that we tried which has won any award like this. What we really noticed about these sardines when we opened the tin was the beautiful silver colour of the sardines, which looked really fresh and plump. The taste was excellent and not only do the sardines taste premium, but so does the olive oil that they come in. Learn more and buy them here -

Mount Bay's

At £5 per tin, these tinned sardines from Mount Bay's are quite expensive, but they're seriously premium and definitely some of the tastiest sardines we've ever had. The Sardines are sourced from Brixham and are prepared by hand. They're then steamed and preserved in a very light pickle which according to the team at Mount Bay's, helps to balance their natural oils. We're very impressed by these tinned sardines, learn more and buy them here -

John West

John West is best known as a great tuna brand, but the tinned sardines from John West are also excellent. These sardines are only caught between the months of April and December, which helps to ensure that only best quality sardines are caught and tinned. We really liked these sardines from John West and thought that quality and taste were superb. Learn more and buy them here -

We've only included one own-brand of tinned sardines in this guide, and that's these sardines from Sainsbury's. We're very impressed that they're responsibly sourced and we found them to be very tasty and to look very plump. We tried the sardines from Sainsbury's in spring water, but they're available to buy in olive oil too. Learn more and buy them here -
