We tried and tested the best red wines in Morrisons

These days, it seems you've got to safeguard and savour the things you enjoy. As the world becomes more chaotic, I've started to really get into wine. It may be a good time to get in touch with Better Help, but right now I'm enjoying myself.

If, like me, you love a nice glass of wine on a Friday or Saturday evening, then you'll love the wines from Morrisons. While you'll spend more than the red wines from Aldi or Lidl, you'll not be disappointed.

So, I tried some of the best red wines in Mrrisons, and here are my thoughts.

Pata Negra Rioja (£8.75)

If you’re on the hunt for the best red wine Morrisons, this is an amazing wine in the mid-range selection; the Pata Negra Rioja Crianza Special Edition is a fantastic wine.

It pours a classic ruby red with a light edge, with aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries and vanilla (from its oak casking). There’s also a hint of clove and dried herbs that add an extra layer of savoury.

On the palate, it’s smooth yet structured, with juicy red fruit flavours balanced by gentle spice from 12 months of oak ageing. The tannins are soft and rounded, leaving a silky finish that makes it easy to enjoy on its own or alongside roasted lamb, charcuterie, or rich pasta dishes.

The wine comes from Marqués de Carrión, based in Labastida at the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria in Rioja Alavesa. With a winemaking history dating to 1898, the estate is known for producing high quality, Rioja wines.

Overall, this is a complex yet drinkable. Crianza that offers excellent value. A great choice.

Kleine Zalze Cabernet Sauvignon (£8.50)

A classic South African red with depth and character, this Stellenbosch Coastal Blend is an excellent choice if you're looking for a fantastic red wine in Morrisons.

In the glass, it shows a deep colour. On the nose, aromas of blackcurrants and ripe cherries come through first, followed by layers of plum and a gentle lift of spice.

It's a rich and rounded wine, with juicy dark fruit flavours balanced by subtle oaky vanilla-y notes and soft tannins. The finish is smooth and lingering, making it a versatile wine to enjoy with grilled meats, slow-cooker stews, or a cheeseboard.

The philosophy behind the wine is rooted in the vineyards: careful selection of grape varieties suited to different soils and slopes across the Cape’s Coastal region. The fruit is primarily sourced from Stellenbosch, with contributions from vineyards in Durbanville and the Swartland.

Winemaking here has a long heritage, dating back to 1695. Today, this renowned winery in the heart of the Cape Winelands continues to uphold its reputation for crafting wines of outstanding quality.

For £8.50, this is a steal: you can grab one in a Morrison's store, or on their website here.

Morrisons Shiraz (Best of South Africa) (£7.50)

The Morrisons "The Best" Shiraz is a great example of the supermarket’s collaboration with some of the world’s most respected producers. Made in partnership with Riebeek Valley Wine Co. in South Africa’s Swartland region, it captures both elegance and approachability in the glass.

On the nose, ripe plum and cherry aromas, followed by spice. The palate is smooth, with rich dark fruit flavours complementing hint of chocolate. A delicate floral and woody lift from a small portion of oak-aged wine. The result is a well-rounded Shiraz that balances fruitiness with just enough depth to make it versatile for food pairings - think barbecue (good ol brai), hearty stews and rich lasagne.

Morrisons The Best range was created by blending the finest parcels of grapes each vintage. The aim of the scheme is to bring shoppers a fresh take on beloved wine styles at exceptional value. With the Swartland region fast gaining recognition as one of South Africa’s most exciting wine areas, this Shiraz reflects both tradition and innovation.

Ink by Grant Burge Barossa Ink Shiraz Red Wine (£12.00)

The Barossa Ink Shiraz is a bold Australian red that more than lives up to all expectations. It's made in the heart of the Barossa - the country’s premium Shiraz region. The wine is as dark and opulent, pouring almost black in the glass with a deep purple colour.

It’s rich and bursting with ripe berry aromas. The palate delivers layers of sweet jammy blackberries, cherries, and plums, all balanced by decadent hints of mocha and dark chocolate - a faint scent of vanilla.

This is a wine that makes an immediate impact, pairing beautifully with steak, lamb shank or a family sized packet of crisps.

What sets Barossa Ink apart is not just the wine but also the collaboration behind it. Created by Grant Burge Wines in partnership with New York artist Craig Costello, founder of KRINK, it’s designed to leave an impression inside and out. The inky richness in the glass reflects both the bold artistry and the vibrant, sun-drenched vineyards of South Australia.

This wine is available in multiple supermarkets, but this post is about red wines in Morrisons, so here is the product page on their website.
