Best protein water – 4 options to try if you want to enjoy water with a protein boost

Published by Finn Hayden

Protein is an essential building block of muscle, and getting protein in after a workout is essential to help repair your muscles and ultimately, make them bigger. Most people will make a protein shake using protein powder, but after a hard workout, often the last thing you want to consume is a thick, heavy protein shake.

That's why protein water is such a great product - it contains all of the essential protein that you'd find in a protein shake, but it's much lighter and can actually refresh you rather than make you feel bloated.

You won't find too many options when it comes to protein water that you can buy in the UK, but we're pleased to see that the product is slowly growing in popularity and there are quite a few options. We thought it would be useful to round up the best protein water that we've tried, let's get into it:

Vieve

There is so much which impresses us about the Vieve protein water that it's hard to know where to begin - for starters, with 20g of protein per 500ml bottle, it had the highest protein content of any protein water we could find. It's also naturally flavoured using real fruit juice, plus it contains zero added sugar. And at only 85 calories per bottle, you can get your protein in after or during a workout, safe in the knowledge that you're not guzzling a bunch of calories too. Oh, and it's dairy free. If you can't tell already, we're very impressed, learn more and buy it here - amazon.co.uk

Upbeat Summer Lemon protein water

We have to say that the best tasting protein water we had by far was this Summer Lemon flavour protein water from Upbeat Drinks. The lemon flavour was both delicious and really refreshing, and we were more than happy to drink this immediately after a workout and even sip on it during the workout. Each 500ml bottle contains 12g of protein as well as B Vitamins which help to energise you. It's also free from sugar, but still has a bit of a sweetness due to the stevia sweetener used. The protein comes from Whey Protein Isolate, so it's also suitable for vegetarians. We love this protein water, learn more and buy it here - hollandandbarrett.com

Wow Hydrate Protein Water Summer Fruits

Wow Hydrate is probably the biggest protein water brand in the UK at the moment, with products stocked in major UK supermarkets such as Tesco. The protein in the bottles is derived from collagen peptides, and each 500ml bottle contains 10g of protein. We like that the protein water also contains Vitamin C, D, and B6 alongside the protein, which all help to aid recovery after a hard workout. It's also sugar and fat free, but despite that we think it tastes great, especially the Summer Fruits flavour. Overall, this is a great and relatively cheap option for protein water which is readily available. Learn more and buy it here - tesco.com

Upbeat orange & passionfruit

The other protein water that we tried from the Upbeat brand was the Orange and Passionfruit variety, and although we didn't like the taste quite as much as the Summer Lemon variety, it still tasted great. This protein water is also made using whey protein isolate, and also contains 12g of protein per 500ml. You can learn more and buy it here - amazon.co.uk
