The best oven chips you can buy in the UK (top 6)

Everyone loves chips, but everyone also knows that they're usually packed with calories, especially if you buy them from the local chip shop.

But if you swap your chips from the chip shop for good oven chips, you can save a lot of calories without compromising on taste. There are lots of good options when it comes to oven chips, so we thought it would be useful to round up the best oven chips you can buy in the UK. Let's get into it:

Strong Roots Crispy Skinny Fries

Of all the oven chips we tried for this guide, we'd probably have to say that the best we tried were the Strong Roots Crispy Skinny Fries. They've got a little bit of skin left on them which adds a really nice taste and texture, and they're also made with a tiny pinch of paprika for an added bit of flavour. They're also very low in salt (0.21g per 100g) and contain no added sugar. These fries are coated in a rice flour batter which gives them extra crispiness and is a nice touch. On top of all of this, Strong Roots is a carbon neutral company, so you can feel extra good about the oven chips you're eating. Learn more and buy them here - ocado.com

Sainsbury's SO Organic Chips

We've already mentioned that we think Sainsbury's is one of the best supermarkets for organic food, but we have to admit that we were very shocked to find organic oven chips available to buy in the frozen aisle at our local Sainsbury's. They're French Fries style and only take 20 minutes to cook, and we found them to be very tasty and nice and crispy. Learn more and buy them here - sainsburys.co.uk

Waitrose Chunky Chips

The only other supermarket own-brand oven chips which we felt were worthy of a place in this list are the chunky oven chips from Waitrose - made from British potatoes, these thick chips are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. They cooked in sunflower oil and the texture is great. We were also very impressed to see that these chips have a 4 out of 5 rating on the Waitrose website from over 100 reviews, so clearly we're not the only ones who like these oven chips. Aunt Bessie's Homestyle Chips

Aunt Bessie's is probably best known as a Yorkshire Pudding brand, (we're big fans of the gluten free Yorkshire puddings), but the Homestyle oven chips from Aunt Bessie's are also excellent. They're made in the traditional way, and the end result are chips which are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The potatoes used to make these oven chips are frozen as soon as they're picked, and then very quickly turned into oven chips to retain a fresh taste. We're also impressed to see that these oven chips are listed as gluten free. Learn more and buy them here - ocado.com

Albert Bartlett Homestyle Chips

Albert Bartlett is a big name in the world of potatoes (we think the brand makes some of the best roast potatoes), but not many people realise that the brand also makes excellent oven chips. As you'd expect, these oven chips are made using Albert Bartlett rooster potatoes, and we'd actually liken the crispiness of these chips to the lovely roast potatoes from the brand. The potatoes used to make these oven chips are grown and processed in the UK, and you can oven cook them from frozen. Learn more and buy them here - sainsburys.co.uk

McCain Home Chips

McCain is probably the biggest oven chip brand in the UK, and there are so many types of oven chips that you can buy from the brand that it was hard to know which to include in this guide. But of all the McCain oven chips that we've tried, we think the Home Chips are the best. They're made from 100% British potatoes and don't contain any artificial colours or flavours. They're also straight-cut, so they're very versatile and can be used in a number of dishes. Learn more and buy them here - tesco.com
