Best microwave popcorn – 5 great options for an instant popped treat

Published by Finn Hayden

As we've written about previously, popcorn is an excellent low calorie snack which can work as a great alternative to crisps, Although there are loads of readymade popcorn options out there to choose from, nothing quite beats the taste and smell of freshly made popcorn. Because not all of us have the space for a proper popcorn machine, making microwave popcorn is a great way to get the taste of freshly made popcorn without all the hassle.

There are lots of great options when it comes to microwave popcorn, so we thought it would be useful to round up the best that you can buy in the UK. Let's get into it:

Propercorn Sweet microwaveable

We love the Propercorn brand, because we feel that they've managed to elevate popcorn as a product. All of the popcorn from Propercorn is great, but we think the sweet microwave popcorn from the brand is extra special, particularly for those of you who have a sweet tooth and prefer sweeter popcorn. Made using natural seasoning and wholegrain corn, this is actually the only palm oil free microwave popcorn available to buy in the UK. Instead of palm oil, Propercorn uses a blend of Shea Oil and Rapeseed Oil. We love the taste of this popcorn when it's fresh out of the microwave, and although it tends to be a bit pricier than some of the other brands, we think it's worth it. Butterkist Salted

Butterkist is probably the biggest popcorn brand in the UK, and we actually think that the microwave popcorn from this brand is better than the already popped popcorn from Butterkist. It's free from any artificial colours and flavours, and it contains just a slight touch of salt which suits our taste preferences perfectly. It also only contains 135 calories per 30g serving. Eazypop microwave popcorn

If you're making microwave popcorn for 1 then buying a pack from Eazypop is a great idea. We love this product because it's so simple yet delicious - it contains just 3 ingredients. You can buy sweet or salted versions of this popcorn, and it's ready in just minutes. Learn more and buy it here - sainsburys.co.uk

SPAR microwave popcorn

Like so many of the own-brand products that we've tried from SPAR, we were pleasantly surprised by how good the own-brand microwave popcorn was from the supermarket chain. It's made using Maize kernels and is a very straightforward but tasty product. Learn more and buy it here - spar.co.uk

Butterkist Tasty Sweet

If you enjoy the salted microwave popcorn from Butterkist, then you'll probably love the Tasty Sweet microwave popcorn too. As the name suggests, this is sweet popcorn, but it isn't sickly sweet and we find the flavour to be very nice. And it seems that a lot of people agree with us as the product has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 from more than 30 reviews on the Tesco website. Learn more and buy it here - tesco.com
