The best kefir you can buy in the UK (top 5)

Published by Finn Hayden

Getting more friendly bacteria into your gut is really important for your health, and we're lucky that it's easier than ever to get more of this friendly bacteria in your diet. We've published guides previously about products such as kombucha and probiotic yoghurt, both of which are very tasty and packed with these good bacteria.

Another excellent product you can buy which is packed with friendly bacteria is kefir, and there are lots of options when it comes to kefir that you can buy in the UK. We thought it would be useful to round up the best kefir that you can buy, let's get into it:

Biotiful

Biotiful has emerged as probably the most popular kefir brand in the UK at the moment, and we're not too surprised by this at all. The kefir from Biotiful is excellent and not only tastes great but is also very well made. These kefir drinks contain no added sugar and are 100% free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives. The fruity flavour comes from real fruit purée and the milk used to make the product comes from Red Tractor approved farms. Learn more and buy it here - tesco.com

Yeo Valley drinking kefir

We're massive fans of the Yeo Valley brand and genuinely think that everything they produce is excellent, particularly the yoghurt. So we were delighted to see that Yeo Valley has added a drinking kefir to its range of products. Each bottle of this kefir contains 14 different live cultures, and the milk used to make it is 100% organic. We're big fans of the Natural variety of this kefir which has a lovely tangy taste, but the Cherry flavour is also excellent and is made using all natural ingredients. Waitrose gut health kefir

We've loved so many of the food products that we've bought and tried from Waitrose over the years, with everything from the coffee bags to the lactose free cheese really impressing us. Waitrose was one of the only supermarkets that we found with an own-brand kefir product, and we have to admit that we were a little bit skeptical at first. But after trying it, we were really surprised at how good it was. It's made using British free range milk and has a lovely sour taste. The flavoured kefir drinks within the range are made without added sugar and with real fruit purée. Learn more and buy it here - waitrose.com

Cocos

So far all of the kefir products that we've included in this guide have been made using cow's milk, but there are some excellent vegan kefir options out there too. This kefir from Cocos is made without cow's milk, but is still a great product and is still packed with friendly bacteria. Made using organic coconut milk, this kefir actually has a really pleasant natural sweetness and definitely tastes less sour than kefir made using cow's milk. Learn more and buy it here - ocado.com

Arla organic kefir

The Arla brand makes some excellent dairy products, and we recently published a guide in which we mentioned that we were really impressed by the great skyr yoghurt from the brand. The kefir from Arla has only recently appeared on supermarket shelves, but it's a great product and well worthy of a place in this guide. Made with real kefir grains and from the milk of grass-fed cows, this kefir is packed with live cultures including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus kefirgranum, Lactococcus lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus and Kluyveromyces marxianus.
