The best HGV theory test apps you can download in the UK (top 4)
Driving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) is serious business, and even if you’ve already got a standard driving license, you can’t just jump behind the wheel of an HGV and start driving.
You need to pass an HGV theory and practical test before you can drive an HGV, but these tests are notoriously hard and not easy to pass. It’s often the HGV theory test which trips people up, but luckily there are lots of apps out there which will help you to revise for this test. We thought it would be useful to round up the best HGV theory test apps you can download, let’s get into it:
HGV Theory Test
HGV Theory Test Kit
The free version of the HGV Theory Test Kit app actually gives you more questions from more categories than the free version of the HGV theory test app - as well as test questions from the Vehicle Weights and Dimensions and Drivers’ Hours and Rest Period sections, you also get questions from the Vehicle Condition and Leaving the Vehicle sections. And as well as being able to test yourself on these sections, there is also a handbook section which allows you to see all the information about these sections that you’d get from the official HGV theory test handbook. This is really useful because you can study the handbook section then answer questions based on what you’ve read within the handbook section, all within the app. Within the Practice section of the app you can choose to answer random questions from any section, which is great for last-minute revision. LGV & HGV Theory Test
The LGV & HGV theory test app features questions related to both the LGV and HGV theory tests, but obviously, we'd recommend sticking to the HGV theory test questions. The free version of the app only gives you access to questions within the Vehicle Weights and Dimensions section, but you get access to 76 different questions relating to this section of this test. The questions are all updated to match questions that you'll find in the 2023 version of the test. Similar to the other apps we've included in this guide, there is an 'explain' option for each question which explains the answers, but what's really useful about this app is that you can use the 'explain' function before you've answered the question. You can also flag questions within the test if there are any that you really need to revise and want to revisit. If you pay for the premium version of the app you get access to 1096 questions, and it's only £9.99. HGVT
The HGVT app is the only app we've included in this guide which requires you to create an account to use it, but it's very quick to do and well worth doing because the free version of the app gives you a lot and this is probably the best free HGV theory test app you can download. The multiple choice mock test section of the app will give you a timed test of 100 random questions from all categories of the HGV theory test, but you can also see multiple choice questions from every section of the test. You also get 5 different videos within the Hazard Perception section of the app, making this the only app which gives you videos within the free version. You also get 6 different CPC case studies within the app, which is really useful. We also love that when you browse the multiple choice section of the app you get a detailed explanation along with each answer, which really helps you to understand it better.
