Heavy cream alternatives you can use in USA recipes (4 options to try)

Published by Finn Hayden

Often when you're following a recipe online, it will have actually been written by someone from the USA. This is especially true if you're trying to make a classic American dish such as key lime pie.

One slightly annoying thing which can often happen is that an ingredient will appear in the recipe which you don't immediately recognise. This can often be because the ingredient simply has a different name.

Heavy cream is an example of an ingredient which can often appear in recipes but which we don't really have an exact match for here in the UK. However, we do have a number of products which closely match heavy cream, and we thought it would be useful to round up a selection of them. Let's get into it:

Double cream

Heavy cream has a milk fat percentage of between 36 to 40 percent, and most double cream sits around 48% fat percentage. So although double cream can typically be a bit thicker than the heavy cream you'll find in the USA, it still makes for a good alternative in recipes. Learn more and buy it here -

Mascarpone

Mascarpone typically has a fat content of around 44%, and it's one of the highest fat cheeses out there. This fat content makes it a very good replacement for heavy cream. Mascarpone has a similar taste to cream cheese, so it can be used for both sweet and savoury dishes.

Elmlea Double Light

If double cream is too light to work as a replacement for heavy cream in your recipe then you could try Elmlea Double Light instead - it's got about 50% of the fat content of double cream, but it doesn't have half of the consistency, and we'd actually say that Elmlea Double Light is very similar to a light heavy cream. Almond Crème

If you're trying to find an alternative to heavy cream for a sweet recipe then this almond crème could be an excellent replacement - it's not quite as thick as cream cheese and because it's made with almonds it has a nice sweetness.

We hope this guide helps you to find a great UK alternative to heavy cream. If you'd like to read something similar, we have a guide about Cool Whip alternatives.
