The best healthy alternatives to Nutella that you can buy in the UK (top 7)

Published by Finn Hayden

Nutella is easily the most popular chocolate spread in the world (although the brand self describes as a "hazelnut spread") and there is no denying that Nutella is very tasty. But as we noted in another guide, Nutella definitely can't be described as healthy.

Luckily, there are lots of alternative chocolate spreads out there which manage to be both tasty and healthy. We thought it would be useful to round up the best healthy alternatives to Nutella, let's get into it:

Mr Organic Chocolate & Hazelnut Spread

It's the blend of chocolate and hazelnut which really makes this spread taste like Nutella, but this spread from Mr Organic is healthier than Nutella in a number of ways. Firstly, as the name suggests, every ingredient used in this spread is 100% organic. It's also made without the use of dairy and it contains absolutely no palm oil. It also contains less than 40g of sugar per 100g, so this spread is significantly lower in sugar compared to Nutella. Overall we love the taste and think it makes for a great alternative, learn more and buy it here -

Sweet Freedom

The Sweet Freedom chocolate spread is much lower in both calories and sugar than Nutella - per 100g, you'll find just 270 calories and 37g of sugar. There is still a nice sweetness in the spread which comes from natural fruit extracts including apple. As well as being healthy, this chocolate spread is also very tasty and has actually won a Great Taste award in 2023. On top of this, it's a Fairtrade product and it contains no palm oil. Made using oat milk, the Plamilla chocolate spread is 100% suitable for vegans. The oat milk used to make this spread also comes from gluten free oats, so this chocolate spread is suitable for coeliacs too. Unlike Nutella, this chocolate spread doesn't contain any palm oil. It also contains around 10g less sugar per 100g compared to Nutella. Learn more and buy it here -

The Vego chocolate spread is another spread which tastes really similar to Nutella because it's made using hazelnuts. This spread only contains 47g of sugar per 100g, which is almost 10g less sugar than you'll find in the same amount of Nutella. This spread is also free from palm oil and made using 100% organic ingredients, so you can feel extra good about eating it. Learn more and buy it here -

Nature's Store

In terms of a spread which is really similar to Nutella in taste, we think Nature's Store is the best of the lot - as with Nutella, it's made from both hazelnuts and chocolate, so it has a very similar taste to Nutella. This spread is free of any artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, and is also free from dairy. It's also wheat and gluten free so coeliacs can eat it safely. Learn more and buy it here -

Jim Jams

What really impresses us about the Jim Jams chocolate spread is that it contains absolutely no added sugar yet it still manages to be sweet and very tasty. That's because it contains Maltitol which is a great natural alternative to sugar. It's also suitable for vegans as it's made from 100% plant-based ingredients, and it's free from gluten.
