6 gluten free ready meals that are actually tasty

Published by Finn Hayden

We publish lots of guides about gluten free foods and we're constantly amazed at the choice which is out there. Not long ago, following a gluten diet was a bit of a nightmare (apparently the pasta tasted like cardboard and the bread came in tins). But nowadays, the choice is almost overwhelming.

Nothing proves this more than seeing the amount of choice there is when it comes to gluten free ready meals - having this choice would have seemed like a pipe dream for people following a gluten free diet a few years ago, but now it's a reality. We wanted to round up the best gluten free ready meals that you can buy in the UK, let's get into it:

M&S Made Without Wheat Macaroni Cheese

We included M&S in our guide to the best supermarkets for gluten free foods, but we maybe didn't rave enough about the fact that M&S has by far the best selection of gluten free ready meals of any of the supermarkets we've seen in the UK. This Made Without Wheat Macaroni Cheese from M&S is absolutely delicious and very hearty - made using mature cheddar cheese, it's very rich and packed with flavour. The pasta is of course gluten free and is made using a blend of cornflour and rice flour, which is what quite a lot of the pasta in our gluten free pasta guide is made of. Kirsty's Pasta Bolognese

Kirsty's is an excellent brand for gluten free foods, and the range includes a number of tasty ready meals. We really enjoyed this pasta bolognese from the range which was surprisingly rich and flavoursome - the pasta is made using a blend of chickpea flour and cornflour, and we think it has a really nice texture. Plus, the bolognese itself is packed with herbs and is delicious. Learn more and buy it here - tesco.com

The Genius brand is great for gluten free food, and we loved the gluten free bread from the brand which we featured in a guide recently. These steak pies from Genius are really delicious and the shortcrust, which is made using maize flour, is really tasty and the texture is great. If you like your steak pies with rich gravy, these are ideal. Learn more and buy them here - sainsburys.co.uk

Schar mini calzone bites

Schar is another brand which is great for gluten free food, including the lovely gluten free crisps we featured in a recent guide. These mini calzone bites are so moreish and this was definitely one of the best ready meals we tried for this guide. These calzone bites are made using rice flour and potato starch, and the filling is a simple (but delicious) mozzarella and tomato filling. Learn more and buy them here - ocado.com

Kirsty's Lentil Cottage Pie

Don't let the fact that this is vegan put you off - this is another fantastic gluten free ready meal from Kirsty's. Made using lots of vegetables including green lentils, the topping of this Lentil Cottage Pie is made from rice flour as well as sweet potato, and is very tasty. Definitely give this one a shot, learn more and buy it here - waitrose.com

M&S Made Without Wheat Spaghetti Bolognese

Although we think that the gluten free spag bol ready meal from Kirsty's is slightly better than this one, we still think the M&S Made Without Wheat Spaghetti Bolognese is excellent and well worthy of a place in this list. The spaghetti is actually really good, and like a lot of gluten free spaghetti that we've tried, it's made using rice flour. We also love that the bolognese is made using red wine vinegar and a touch of rosemary and oregano. Learn more and buy it here - ocado.com
