Cocoa powder that you need to try for drinks & baking (the 5 best we’ve tried)

Published by Finn Hayden

We love chocolate, and we've published lots of guides about this food, from a guide about low sugar chocolate to a guide about vegan white chocolate.

Chocolate is made using cocoa powder, but cocoa powder can be used for lots of things. We think that cocoa powder is a cupboard staple because it can instantly make almost everything taste better, from porridge to smoothies.

Not all cocoa powder is equal, so we thought it would be useful to round up the best cocoa powder that you can buy in the UK. Let's get into it:

Food Thoughts

We'd probably say that the Food Thoughts cocoa powder was the best that we tried - not only is it 100% organic, but it's also sourced from Fairtrade partners. The cocoa beans are sourced from the Dominican Republic, and they're single-origin "Fino de Aroma" beans. This means that they're lightly alkalised and have quite an intense flavour. We certainly found the taste to be more intense than other cocoa powders that we tried for this guide. Learn more and buy it here - sainsburys.co.uk

Waitrose Organic Duchy Cocoa Powder

Regular readers of our guides won't be surprised to see a product from the Waitrose Organic Duchy range because we've been very impressed with a number of the products from this range, such as the lovely maple syrup. This cocoa powder is equally as impressive - made using ethically sourced organic cocoa beans which are grown without the use of artificial chemicals or fertilisers, this cocoa powder is 100% organic and has a lovely richness to it. This is also a Fairtrade product, and when you buy this product, a small donation is made to the Prince of Wales's Charitable Fund. Learn more and buy it here - waitrose.com

Divine

This cocoa powder from Divine is also a top-quality product, and we love that the farmers who grow the cocoa beans get a fair price too - made using cocoa beans from Kuapa Kokoo in Ghana, the beans are grown in the shade of the tropical rainforest, and they are then dried in the sun by the farmers. They are Fairtrade cocoa beans and the team at Divine is committed to treating the farmers they work with fairly. The cocoa powder itself is rich and delicious too, and works well either as a hot chocolate or however else you want to use it (we like it sprinkled on porridge). Tesco Cocoa Powder

We didn't expect to be so impressed by the cocoa powder from Tesco, but it's a great product - not only does it have a lovely tasty and a very chocolatey smell, but it's also Rainforest Alliance certified. This is really important as it means that the beans were sourced using ethical and sustainable methods. This was also the cheapest cocoa powder that we could find. Menier

This cocoa powder from Menier is especially useful for use in desserts - it mixes very well and the taste is lovely and sweet, but it's 100% cocoa and there is nothing else added. This is UTZ Certified Cocoa, which means it has been grown sustainably and with care for the environment. You can learn more about UTZ certification here.
