Benefits of Shilajit : Benefits for Men, Fertility and Sex

More and more, I am reading about herbal supplements that have unbelievable benefits. One of those supplements is Shilajit which is often taken alongside Ashwagandha.

So, we are going to look a little deeper into what Shailjit is, what are the benefits and whether or not it is legit. Let’s get into it.


What is Shilajit?

A lot of the herbal substances that are recommended these days as supplements are usually not something you’d want to consume in their raw form. Many of them are strange, and scary looking mushrooms or roots that you’d be supprised to know people eat them, never mind live to tell the tale.

Shilajit is a brown layer of resin which forms on rock formations in the Himalayan, Altai and Tibetan highlands. So brown slime on rocks in other words. The resin is formed when mountain plants decompose into a strange sludge. Even though this may seem disgusting, Shilajit contains fulvic acid and is very rich in minerals and has been used as a traditional medicine for thousands of years. The uses are said to be as wide as bone fractures and impotence.

Strange right? So what are the benefits of Shilajit?

Cognitive Function

The main component of Shilajit is fulvic acid which is a powerful antioxidant and is said to prevent the accumulation of ‘tau protein’ and can maintain cognitive health. Tau proteins are an essential part of your nervous system but a build-up of them can damage your brain cells, leading to conditions such as Alzheimer’s.

There are clinical trials underway into the effectiveness of Shilajit on Alzheimer’s symptoms, but the theory is that the substance can reduce inflammation and tau build-up.


Benefits of Shilajit for Men (Testosterone, Fertility & Sex)

Believe it or not, Shilajit has been linked with increasing male fertility and increasing sex drive. A study referenced in a few articles like this one gave 60 infertile men Shilajit twice a day for over 90 days. Almost half of the men in the test showed an increase in both sperm count and motility (how they move towards the egg). The Study is here.

The second study showed an increase in levels of testosterone for a group of middle-aged men, after a 90-day course. This is why many bodybuilders, and athletes, take both Shilajit together to improve their performance, recovery and muscle growth. The study is here.

The benefits of Shilajit on sex and men are not known for sure, but there is some evidence to suggest that it may be quite the libido booster.


Increase in Vitality & Energy

There are a few studies into the benefits of Shilajit that look into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and other long term conditions which cause extreme tiredness. The issue here is down to a mitochondrial dysfunction – an issue with energy production at a cellular level.

Researchers tested their theory on rats and showed signs that a steady dose of Shilajit increased their vitality and endurance. The result is thought to be caused by the substance preventing mitochondrial dysfunction and giving them more energy. Whether this finding can be true for humans is still up for debate.


Anemia & Iron Deficiency

The condition of Anemia is caused by a deficiency of haemoglobin in the blood, and it can be caused by an iron deficiency. An Iron deficiency often affects women (who are pregnant) and can have some severe ramifications for your health: including headaches, low energy, weakness and even an irregular heartbeat.

Thankfully, Shilajit contains loads of humic acid and iron which can help your body produce more haemoglobin. While it is certainly not a cure, the supplements can also be a natural source of our daily iron intake.


Altitude Sickness

I will put money on this: Nobody reading this will have altitude sickness ever reading this. If you do, why are you not running down the hill to safety?!

Anyway – Like Cordyceps, Shilajit has been found to aid in the body’s restoration from altitude sickness. The substance is a powerful antioxidant, can improve immunity and memory, is an anti-inflammatory, energy booster and apparently a diuretic to remove fluid from your body. All of these things are apparently great for reducing the symptoms of altitude sickness and can delay its onset.

So if you’re climbing higher your body should grab some Shilajit for the journey.


Benefits of Shilajit vs Ashwagandha

Most of the people that search out Shilajit are looking for benefits that are similar to Ashwagandha. Both show benefits for male well-being and can improve one’s performance in the gym. Both Ashwagandha and Shilajit have been linked to improved muscle growth, increased levels of testosterone and increased energy.

Both also are connected with improving cognitive function and supporting brain health. Whether one is better than the other, there are no clear answers.

The other benefits of Ashwagandha are:

  • Reduced Cortisol Levels
  • Blood Sugar Regulation

So, whether Shilajit is better than Ashwagandha is solely based on why you’re taking the supplements. If you’re unsure, why not take both? It is a great combo to take them together.
