I've been drinking loads of lovely alcohol free beer recently, mainly because I've had quite a boozy summer, but also because I'm trying to be a bit healthier and I want to cut down on my calorie intake.

I just assumed that all alcohol free beers would be lower in calories compared to a normal beer, so imagine my surprise when I looked at the back of an alcohol free beer can the other day in the pub and found that it contained more calories than the normal beer my friend was drinking.

Luckily, there are quite a few excellent alcohol free beers that are low in calories. And here's something interesting I found when researching for this article - almost all of the "mainstream" alcohol free beers are actually pretty high in calories. If you want a lower calorie alcohol free beer, it actually seems to be the craft beers that are your best choice.

I thought it would be useful to round up 6 of the best low calorie alcohol free beers I've tried, let's get into it:

Tennent's Zero Lager - 7kcal per 100ml

Readers of my popular low calorie lager guide won't be surprised to see Tennent's topping this list - I'm not sure what they're putting in the water up there, but almost everything this brand produces seems to be low in calories. Tennent's Zero is no exception, with just 7 calories per 100ml. I would definitely say there are better tasting zero alcohol beers out there, but if you're looking for a non-alcoholic beer that's very low in calories, this is a great choice. Tennent's Zero

Days Lager - 10kcal per 100ml

I really like the taste of the lager from Days and would definitely say it's one of my favourite alcohol free beers, so I was delighted to discover that it only contains 10 calories per 100ml. To put that into perspective, the Birra Moretti Zero beer contains almost twice as many calories with 19kcal per 100ml, so the Days Lager is impressive. Learn more and buy it here - waitrose.com

Days 0% alcohol lager and pale ale

Punk AF - 15kcal per 100ml

This is one of my favourite alcohol free beers, so I was delighted to discover that it's relatively low in calories with just 15kcal per 100ml. It's lower in calories than the Hazy IPA from Lucky Saint which contains 18kcal per 100ml, and I definitely prefer the taste of the Punk AF. Learn more and buy it here - brewdog.com

Corona Cero - 17kcal per 100ml

In terms of mainstream beers that have created an alcohol free version of their beer, Corona Cero came in the lowest in calories per 100ml at 17kcal per 100ml. This was lower than the Stella Artois alcohol free beer (which contain 18kcal per 100ml) and Heineken 0.0% (which contained 21kcal per 100ml). I liked Corona Cero but didn't love it, but if you're at the pub and looking for a low cal non-alcoholic beer to choose, this could be a good option. Learn more and buy it here - asda.com

Hawkstone Zero - 13kcal per 100ml

This one surprised me because this beer has a nice full flavour, so I was expecting it to be high in calories, but it's not. Hawkstone Zero Lager only contains 13kcal per 100ml, and I spotted these bottles in Waitrose right next to some bottles of Poretti Alcohol Free Beer, an alcohol free beer which contains more than double the calorie of Hawkstone Zero Lager per 100ml (29kcal per 100ml). Adnams Ghost Ship Bottle Beer 0.5% - 12kcal per 100ml

I'm a huge fan of the normal Ghost Ship Pale Ale from Adnams, so I was a bit hesitant to try the non-alcoholic version. But not only does it taste great, it's also really low in calories at just 12kcal per 100ml. I like that I can buy it in big bottles too - might just be my personal tastes but I always think beer tastes better out of bottles! Learn more and buy it here - tesco.com
