5 tomato ketchups which are healthier than Heinz

Published by Finn Hayden

When it comes to tomato ketchup, Heinz is the biggest name by a long shot. And we think Heinz is definitely worthy of this top spot, as the tomato ketchup from the brand really is delicious.

But although there is no denying that this ketchup is tasty, people are often shocked to find out how unhealthy it is. We mean this in terms of calories, sugar, and other nutritional statistics. For example, a teaspoon of Heinz tomato ketchup contains 15 calories, 0.3g of salt, and 3.4g of sugar.

Luckily, there is lots of tomato ketchup which tastes just as good as the classic tomato ketchup from Heinz, but which is much healthier. We thought it would be useful to round up the best healthy tomato ketchup that you can buy, let’s get into it:

Heinz 50% less salt and sugar

Let’s start with the obvious one - if you weren’t aware, there is a version of Heinz Tomato Ketchup which has 50% less sugar and salt compared to the standard version. This means that per 15g, this healthier version of the popular tomato ketchup from Heinz contains just 1.7g of sugar and 0.14g of salt. But this version of Heinz tomato ketchup also contains just 10 calories per 15g, which is 5 calories less than what you’ll find in the same amount of the normal Heinz tomato ketchup. You’ll definitely notice that it’s a little less sweet than the standard variety, but we’d say that overall it’s a pretty great alternative to classic Heinz tomato ketchup. Dr Will's

The Dr Will’s range features a variety of healthy food products, but we think the tomato ketchup from the brand is among the best thing you can buy from them. The Dr Will’s tomato ketchup contains 95 calories per 100g, which is 7 calories fewer than you’ll find in 100g of Heinz tomato ketchup. But it’s the low sugar which really impresses us because although this tomato ketchup still has a sweet taste, it contains 6.3g less sugar per 100g compared to Heinz tomato ketchup. You’ll be pleased to know that the sweet taste comes from dates which are used in the ingredients, and there is nothing artificial added to the recipe. We’re also impressed that this tomato ketchup from Dr Will’s has also won a Great Taste award, so we’re not the only ones who think it’s delicious. Learn more and buy it here - dr-wills.com

Stokes Reduced Sugar

We really like the standard tomato ketchup from Stokes, but the brand also has a reduced sugar version of its ketchup which is tasty and pretty healthy. It contains 80 calories per 100g, which is 22 calories fewer than you’ll find in the same amount of the standard Heinz tomato ketchup, and 14g of sugar per 100g, which is 8.8g less sugar than you’ll find in 100g of the standard Heinz tomato ketchup. We also love to see that this tomato ketchup is made using delicious Mediterranean tomatoes, and absolutely nothing artificial. Learn more and buy it here - waitrose.com
