I love a good instant coffee, and I'd now argue that there is instant coffee out there which is almost as good as a filter coffee made from ground coffee. Some coffee lovers might slate me for that, but I stand by it.

I really enjoy a coffee after dinner, but I don't always want a big hit of caffeine so close to bed (and as I get older, my bedtime gets earlier), so I'll often switch my normal coffee for an instant decaf coffee. I've now tried a number of the decaf instant coffees that are available to buy in the UK, so I thought it would be useful to round up what I believe to be the best instant decaf coffee that can be bought, let's get into it:

Clipper Decaf Organic Instant Coffee

Clipper is a brand that many people will associate more so with tea, as the brand has an extensive and very popular range of teas (including green tea and Earl Grey tea), but we love the coffee from Clipper too. In fact, we included the Latin American instant coffee from Clipper in our list of the best instant coffees we've tried. The decaf instant coffee from Clipper is also great - for starters, it's organic, and made from coffee that is Fairtrade. But what we really love about this decaf instant coffee is that it's decaffeinated using the CO2 & spring water method. For those that aren't aware, some companies will use chemical solvents to strip away the caffeine content and create decaf coffee. There's nothing wrong with this inherently and it's a popular method, but I just don't like knowing that the coffee I'm drinking has been treated with chemicals. This blend has quite an intense taste but a clean finish. Learn more and buy it here - amazon.co.uk

Cafe Direct Decaf Instant Macchu Picchu

I've long been a fan of the ground coffee from Cafe Direct, and I'm delighted to discover that the instant decaf coffee from the brand is also great. This is a Fairtrade coffee that is grown at high altitudes and has a lovely, rich taste. It's freeze dried and, like the Clipper instant decaf coffee, it's decaffeinated using the CO2 method instead of chemicals. Learn more and buy it here - amazon.co.uk

Illy Instant Decaffeinato

The Ily ground coffee is very popular, but the brand also makes a great instant decaf coffee that I've been really enjoying. Firstly, it's great to see that this instant coffee is decaffeinated with the CO2 method (using water and carbon dioxide). Secondly, I think the Illy Instant Decaffeinato is a great option for people who enjoy a milder coffee taste - I'd go as far as to describe this instant coffee as quite fruity, and the Illy website mentions that it has notes of orange. It's a versatile product and can be used to make either a hot or cold decaf coffee. Learn more and buy it here - waitrose.com

TrueStart Barista Grade Instant Decaf

Describing an instant coffee as "barista grade" is quite bold, but I do have to say that this instant decaf coffee from TrueStart is fantastic - made from a blend of 50% Colombian Arabica beans and 50% Brazilian Arabica beans, this instant coffee is very smooth and has chocolate notes. Interestingly, this coffee is also independently lab tested to ensure that it's free from mycotoxins and heavy metals. Learn more and buy it here - truestartcoffee.com

Nescafe Azera Decaf Americano

I do really enjoy the Gold Blend Decaf from Nescafe, but for a more premium experience, I think the Nescafe Azera Decaf Americano is a better choice. When I make this, it really does feel like I'm drinking a filter coffee. I assumed that, as is the case with many of the other larger instant coffee brands, this instant decaf coffee would have been decaffeinated using chemicals (because it's cheaper). But impressively, this coffee is decaffeinated using the water method, without the use of any chemicals. This coffee is made from a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans and has a very smooth taste. These are the best instant decaf coffee brands I've tried, but let me know in the comments if you have any other recommendations!
